The Challenge / Mandate:

The firm was seeking a Principal to expand its investment pipeline and support its growing portfolio of search fund investments. The Principal would play a hybrid role encompassing origination, diligence, execution, and portfolio support. In particular, the Principal would:

  • Recruit and mentor search fund entrepreneurs while positioning the firm as a trusted capital partner
  • Represent the firm at conferences, on campuses, and in industry forums
  • Partner with searchers to develop thematic investment theses and evaluate target businesses
  • Lead diligence processes and advise on transaction structuring, valuation, and negotiations
  • Guide the firm’s investment committee with clear and concise analyses of market opportunities, risks, and business fundamentals
  • Serve on the Boards of acquired companies, supporting new CEOs with strategic direction, capital planning, and organizational leadership
  • Monitor investment performance and help guide follow-on decisions and eventual exits

The firm needed someone who could bring both strategic rigor and high emotional intelligence to help founder-CEOs navigate the operational demands of ETA transitions.

Search Strategy

The ideal candidate would combine investing acumen with leadership and mentorship capabilities. Key criteria included:

  • Professional Background: 2–4 years of post-MBA experience at a top-tier consulting firm (e.g., Bain, BCG, McKinsey), ideally with exposure to private equity clients or commercial due diligence workstreams
  • Investment Judgement: Ability to quickly assess business fundamentals, market dynamics, and management teams
  • Entrepreneurial Mindset: Self-starter with a strong ownership mentality who could thrive in an unstructured, high-autonomy environment
  • Soft Skills: High EQ, strong interpersonal communication, low ego, and ability to mentor early-career searchers
  • Analytical Rigor: Strength in both qualitative and quantitative business analysis, with clear, executive-ready communication skills
  • Education: Top-tier MBA required

The search focused on professionals who had not only the strategic toolkit to evaluate opportunities but also the people skills to engage aspiring entrepreneurs and portfolio CEOs.

The Placement

The selected candidate brought a powerful blend of leadership and strategic insight. A former Army officer turned Bain consultant, he had developed a reputation for team leadership, operational execution, and organizational development. His experience advising private equity clients gave him firsthand exposure to deal evaluation and post-acquisition strategy, while his leadership roles in the military honed his ability to mentor and mobilize teams in high-stakes environments. He stood out for his practical problem-solving approach, calm under pressure, and passion for coaching others.

The Outcome:

Since being placed by ECA, the new Principal has made a strong impact—expanding the firm’s network of search entrepreneurs, strengthening investment evaluation processes, and taking on board responsibilities across multiple portfolio companies. He has since been promoted within the firm and, now with hiring authority, has re-engaged ECA to help source top-tier talent for executive roles across the portfolio.
